As the percentage of workloads operating in the cloud moves toward 50%, based on this OMDIA report, having a proper strategic plan before migrating your business to the cloud will help you make the best of it. To achieve the best outcomes you need to make the right decisions when selecting the workloads that you need to migrate, as well as the correct migration approach. However, to achieve these outcomes, you need meaningful metrics and visibility into your workload.

Today, there are more monitoring and management tools than ever before, that can collect logs and traces. But the two things we’re looking for when planning a strategy to migrate your workload to cloud: a tool that will provide you with a clear image of your business as a whole, and continue to represent it through the entire journey from on-premise to cloud. This is something that Observability and Management platform on Oracle Cloud offers. It gives users visibility and insights across all layers of their workload, which can be deployed in any environment. The platform offers a range of products such as:

  • Application Performance Monitoring “Figure 1”.
  • Database Management
  • Logging “Figure 2”.
  • Logging Analytics “Figure 3”.
  • Service Connector Hub
  • Operations Insights “Figure 4”.

As well as several other services that aim to reduce IT complexity by reducing the number of tools you would need to monitor and view your entire workload, and bring it all in a single place associated with highly automated, intelligent, and integrated functionalities to improve IT operations management— simplifying troubleshooting.

But it’s not only about logs and traces! Using the Observability and management platform will also help you perform in-depth analysis of your business performance and identify several criteria that will help you during your journey from on-premise environment to cloud, such as the following:

Measure your Baseline

Measuring your on-premise performance baseline and the resource usage will help you understand the current workload state and identify the purpose behind your migration (performance uplift, cost-saving,etc…). Additionally, you will be able to follow the usage trend and recognize if the utilization increased at any specific period, and based on that you can size your cloud resources to be responsive to such increases.

Oracle Cloud provides auto-scaling features for several resources which makes it highly elastic, you can find more detailed info here.

What should I move?

Understanding your system dependencies will help you with the selection process of the workloads to migrate, and the capabilities that the organization is looking to develop, especially if your workload integrates with a lot of activities in-between your environment.

Reduce Migration Risks

Being able to monitor your workload along the journey from on-premises to cloud while storing the metrics and logs through every stage, will allow you to identify any issue appearing at any point, and determine the affected areas across the stack enabling you to compare the data you get between the different phases.

Validate your Outcomes

Using the information stored from on-premise along the way to the cloud will help you prove the benefits achieved from the migration with solid metrics, comparing the outcomes with the baseline to measure success rate.

To Wrap Up

Observability and Management Platform on Oracle Cloud offers a set of services that will help you make informed decisions and minimize the impact of the migration from on-premise to cloud environment, ensuring there is no negative business impact or cost.
